Scouter Training

Troop 4060 has a large cadre of adult Scouters.  We are lucky enough to have adults with unique backgrounds and special training.  

If you have a special skill, talent or resource, please come talk to us. 

If you considering joining our ranks, we want to help get you trained up.    

All Adult Leaders

All adult leaders must complete the following:

• BSA Background Check

• Complete an Adult Application 

• Be approved by our Troop Committee

• Youth Protection Training 

Troop Committee Members

We meet as a group and discuss and plan out a lot of the troop operations throughout the year.  Some Committee Members will also sit on Boards of Review for our Scouts.  We also provide day-to-day adult support if needed.  No one-on-one contact with youth is allowed at any time, which is covered in your Youth Protection Training.

Committee Members Requirements 

• Must be 18+

• BSA Background Check

• Complete an Adult Application - use Code MC

  • Application Fee paid by the Troop

• Approved by our Troop Committee

• Youth Protection Training 

  • Must be completed yearly

  • This is generally completed online

• Troop Committee Challenge Specific Training

  • Learn about all the positions of the committee and how they contribute to the success of a troop

  • This can be completed online or at a council training event

Assistant Scoutmasters

Our Assistant Scoutmasters play a vital role in the troop.  We are mentors, role models and ensure the safety of our scouts at meetings and on outings.  Some of our outings require specialty training.

Assistant Scoutmasters Requirements 

• Must be 18

• BSA Background Check

• Complete an Adult Application - use Code SA

  • Application Fee paid by the Troop

• Approved by our Troop Committee

• Approved by our Scoutmaster

• Youth Protection Training 

  • Must be completed yearly

  • This is generally completed online

• Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training

  • Learn how a "Scout-led" troop operates

  • This can be completed online or at a council training event

• Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) 

  • Learn about the outdoor skills a Scout must master on the journey to First Class

  • This must be completed in person and require an overnight campout

To enhances our ability to deliver a high quality program to our scouts, we need specially trained or certified leaders for certain activities.  Because this is important to us, the troop pays for this training.

Specialty Training

• Wilderness First Aid

  • We encourage all ASMs to attend this course

  • Training enhances safety on outings and our ability to train scouts

  • Our Troop delivers this course twice a year to the Council 

• Wood Badge

  • This week long (or two weekend) course teaches the BSA's style of leadership training

  • Learn and be a part of the Patrol Method

  • Come back with new Scouting Skills and a broader understanding of how Scouting works

  • Make connections with other scouters in this and local Councils

• Powder Horn

  • Learn about High Adventure

  • Come back with a better understanding of the intent of our long term planning 

• Winter Adventure Skills

  • We teach and send scouts and adults to this training each year

  • Highly recommend that you take this course is you plan to attend a winter campout with the Troop

• Aquatics Training

  • Safety Afloat 

    • Developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat

    • Training available online

  • Safe Swim Defense Training

    • A plan for conducting swimming activities in a safe manner

    • Training available online

  • Paddle Craft Safety 

    • Expands Safety Afloat training to include the skills and knowledge needed for a unit leader to confidently supervise canoeing or kayaking excursions on flat water

  • Swimming & Water Rescue

    • Information and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to swimming emergencies during unit swimming activities

• COPE Training

  • COPE training is required when running a COPE or Climbing event

  • We generally need a COPE Level 1 and COPE Level 2 to operate the Climbing wall at Fire Mountain

• Climb On Safely

  • Required for any climbing Event

  • Training available online

• NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

  • These are required anytime we shoot rifles and shotguns

  • More trained instructors means more eyes on the range

• Wilderness Survival and Bushcraft

  • Learn basic and advanced survival techniques

  • We have specially trained instructors in our Troop

• Leave No Trace

  • There are various levels of LNT

  • The Council LNT trainer is in our Troop and can set you up with training

  • Information on LNT and Scouting can be found at scouting.org 

• Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • If you plan to work with Scouts on the Citizenship in Society Merit badge, this is required training

  • A short course can be completed online

  • Information on DEI can be found at scouting.org

Merit Badge Counselor

With over 100 merit badges, you likely have a background that allows you to be a counselor for multiple badges.

Eligibility is determined by the Council.  Some MB require special training or certifications.  If you have questions, we can connect you with the council's Advancement Chair, who is also in Troop 4060 . 

Merit Badge Counselor Requirements 

• Must be 18

• Complete Merit Badge Counselor Application

• Complete an Adult Application - use Code 42

  • Merit Badge Counselors do NOT pay an Application Fee

• Approved by Council

• Youth Protection Training 

  • Must be completed yearly

  • This is generally completed online

• Merit Badge Counselor Training

Please note that to be a Counselor for our Scouts, they must have permission from our Scoutmaster.  Our Troop has banned a few Counselors in the past.

Volunteers

Adults wanting to volunteer should speak with our Scoutmaster and Committee Chair.  We can always use help.  Please note that NO one-on-one contact is allowed with any scout.
